Matchday 6 - report
Thanda Royal Zulu 0 - Bidvest Wits 1
DURBAN, November 2 (Absa Premier League) – A penalty from Sifiso Myeni early in the second half is enough to help Bidvest Wits claim all the points in a 1-0 win over Thanda Royal Zulu on Sunday.
In a thrilling game in Hammersdale, both sides created plenty of chances with poor finishing largely responsible for a lack of goals as the Amabhubesi again finished empty handed.
In the opening minutes a strong run from Peter Ndlovu saw him muscle his way past two defenders, before teeing up Bernard Parker, who saw his shot blocked by a defender and the subsequent rebound dragged narrowly wide by July Mahlangu.
Clifford Mulenga then wasted a glorious chance for Wits by blazing over after the referee awarded an indirect free-kick in the penalty area following dangerous play from Ahmed Muhammed.
Felix Obada was next to come close, narrowly curling his 20-yard free-kick over the bar as chances continued to come thick and fast at the Mpumalanga Stadium.
The Nigerian was again in the mix in the 18th minute latching onto a fantastic long ball down the right and cutting into the box, before a poor pass was cleared away by Ashraf Hendricks.
But a poor corner from the hosts saw Roger de Sa’s team spectacularly turn defence into attack with Zambian Mulenga surging through the midfield and playing in Myeni, but he saw his one-on-one shot kept out by a sprawling Aubrey Mathibe.
Myeni missed another glorious chance on the half-hour mark after a free-kick was not properly cleared by the home team, with the midfielder this time pulling his shot from the edge of the area just past the right-hand post.
Immediately after Energy Murambadoro was almost caught out by an arrowed cross from Issac Leshabane on the left, before Neil Winstanley produced a goal-saving tackle to keep out Ndlovu after he was put through by Parker.
Myeni was again the culprit of a one-on-one miss after a second Mulenga-led breakaway, which ended with Mathibe producing an excellent point-blank save from 12-yards out.
That move ended a thrilling first half that had everything but a goal, which arrived, courtesy of a penalty, seven minutes into the second period.
A long Winstanley throw-in from the left was poorly dealt with by Thanda and the ball fell to Mulenga, who’s blasted shot was kept out by the hand of Leshabane leaving the referee no choice.
And Myeni made amends for his early misses striking a clinical penalty into the top corner to put the Clever Boys ahead.
James Madidilani almost equalised in the 68th minute when his 25-yard free-kick was heading in, only for Murambadoro to intervene by punching the ball away.
Myeni wasted yet another guilt-edged chance from close range, with Thanda’s only chances late on coming courtesy of off-target headers from Parker and Muhammed.
The full-time whistle soon followed ending another disappointing game for Roger Palmgren, who watched our boys show plenty of promise without the desired result.
