DURBAN, October 5 (Absa Premier League) – Daine Klate scored an injury-time winner to hand 10-man Supersport United an unlikely 2-1 victory over Thanda Royal Zulu in Hammarsdale on Sunday.
Ricardo Katza opened the scoring early on, but Felix Obada drew his side level after 18 minutes, before the game turned on its head on the half-hour mark following the dismissal of Lemasse Fikru.
But Klate had the final say snatching all three points for Gavin Hunt’s team, who have now won four out of their five meetings against Thanda.
The defending champions were off to a flying start at the Mpumalanga Stadium, when Tonic Chabalala brought down Lemasse Fikru in the third minute and Katza thumped the ball home – albeit through a deflection – from the ensuing 20-yard free-kick.
Moments later South Africa international Klate almost put his side two up, but his shot from the left side of the penalty area clipped the cross-bar before sailing over.
Glen Salmon then wastefully put his six-yard header from a corner wide as the visitors again threatened to extend their lead.
However, they were made to pay for those misses when a flowing move involving Bernard Parker and Sibusiso Hadebe down the left flank ended with the latter teeing up Obada for a cracking low finish from the centre of the penalty area.
In the 29th minute Fikru was shown a straight red card after he deliberately trudged on the neck of July Mahlangu, leaving referee Jerome Damon no option, but to hand the Ethiopian his marching orders.
Despite having the numerical advantage, the hosts failed to create too many more openings in the remainder of the half – their best chance coming five minutes before the break when Nkosinathi Nhleko drilled his shot wide after a smart turn in the penalty area.
After the restart, both teams continued to struggle, with chance few and far between.
The first opening of the second period came in the 74th minute when Katza and Salmon seemed to get into each others way following a superbly delivered 20-yard free-kick from Klate that eventually drifted wide.
Roger Palmgren then brought on Clement Mazibuko in place of Hadebe, but the change failed to inspire a lacklustre Thanda.
At the other end, sloppy defending from the hosts and a rush of blood from Aubrey Mathibe saw the ball fall to Elias Pelembe, who almost caught out the goalkeeper with his lobbed effort that dropped inches wide.
And with five minutes of stoppage time added, the visitors were awarded a free-kick on the left and, after Klate saw his initial free-kick blocked, the midfielder struck the rebound powerfully beyond Mathibe to steal all the points for Matsatsantsa.
